I came across an interesting study by the National Coalition for the Homeless, and they advance that “approximately 16% of the single adult homeless population suffers from some form of severe and persistent mental illness (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2005).” I thought the number would have been higher. This study attributes homelessness to various factors. Weirdly enough, education is not really mentioned in this study. Why are people homeless?

The article was very interesting. As our economy gets worse, there will be less public assistance and even higher unemployment rates. People need help and they will not be able to get it.
Just reading this now, but think it highlights a lot of important variables for us to be aware of as these children and families come into our classroom, and a part of our communities. The face of the homeless is changing, and as such so are their needs. I think it speaks to the fact that as teachers, we must be willing to become involved — meeting needs when able and networking with others to effect change.
